Why Rekey a Lock?
If you have purchased, rented or leased a home, townhome, apartment or commercial property, don't make the mistake of continuing to use the old lock and keys. Past residents, tradesmen, friends or real estate agents may possess copies of your keys. The way to prevent those keys from accessing your new property is by having your locks rekeyed. Rekeying simply means adjusting the tumblers of the locks so that only a new key combination can operate them. It's a small effort with a real power to protect you.
Rekeying If you're concerned that someone else has your key, you can elect to rekey or change 'the combination' of your existing lock. This is often times less expensive than replacing the hardware completely. Bring us your working lock and key (if available) and we will create new keys that work. Any keys that used to work with the lock will no longer fit. We do recommend however that you consider replacing your locks with restricted, bump proof and pick resistant locks. These new locks take the guess workout of knowing who has keys that will operate YOUR locks. Many of today's popular lock brands use the same key combinations and key blanks that have been recycled since the typical pin tumbler lock has been in existence. Ask yourself these 4 simple questions: 1. Do you know who has keys to your locks? 2. How many people will you be giving keys to? 3. Do you care if those you give keys to can get duplicates made without your knowledge? 4. Do you need to know who opens a lock and when? If any of these items are of concern to you we have solutions, call or stop in. Keying Alike Most times referred to erroneously as 'master keyed' typically a residence will have one key combination that works all locks or doors. This is technically referred to as 'keyed alike.' A single key combination regardless of type of lock cylinder is the most secure compared to 'master keyed.' Master keying Master keying offers convenience. It allows a property manger or owner to have 'one key' to open all locks with individual, non interchangeable keys per each individual lock or door". Think of an apartment complex or industrial complex where access needs to limited by unit or office but management needs access to all. One key can open every lock, but every lock still has it's own unique key. There is a draw back to master keying since in order to allow more than one key combination to operate those locks it also requires pins to be added to allow those designated keys to operate. By pinning the lock to more than one key it conceivably allows more than the intended number of keys to operate, these keys are known as 'ghost keys.' Anyone considering a master keys system should be aware of this. Should you have questions about this, please call or stop in, we would be happy to show you how this works.On-Site Professional Service and Installation
